Biomass is a renewable energy source called organic mass which has organic content and is used in electricity and power generation through different processes. Particularly in areas where agricultural and animal production is high, the potential of biomass generated as waste is high. Biomass consists of scrap and timber, forest wastes, agricultural product wastes, aquatic plants, urban solid wastes, wastewater, fertilizer and some waste residues. Continuous and regular supply of wastes is important for the sustainability of renewable energy production. In this context biomass is a renewable energy source.
Biomass is the organic material in which the sunlight energy is stored by chemical bonding. Decay, combustion and decomposition and breakage of carbon, oxygen and hydrogen molecules result in the storage of chemical energy. Biomass is transformed into thermal energy, liquid, solid, gaseous fuels and chemical products through various transformation processes. Commonly used bioenergy technologies are direct combustion, co-combustion, gasification, pyrolysis, anaerobic digestion and fermentation.
