Fossil fuels are fuels which consist of geological accumulation of carbon-rich material formed by the decomposition of organic materials due to heat, pressure and time conditions. To make a general definition, they were performed by the accumulation of the residues of plants and animals that are buried under the soil millions of years ago as a result of thermochemical reactions. Fossil fuels can be solid, liquid or gas. Examples include coal as a solid, oil as a liquid and natural gas as a gas. Fossil fuels are produced in different ways by purifying or refining hydrocarbons as fuels.
Biogas is also a hydrocarbon fuel, but it does not belong to the fossil fuel class. Biogas is produced by anaerobic digestion or fermentation of agricultural, animal and industrial wastes which is a gas mixture of mostly methane and carbondioxide. Biogas does not occur geologically like fossil fuels and is not obtained by mining. Although biogas can be purified up to natural gas level, it is not in this class but in the renewable methane class.
